What Meme Lab actually does

Meme Lab is a personal meme picker. You paste a complete comment or describe a situation — a group-chat argument, a workplace absurdity, a small domestic injustice — and it returns the one meme that fits it best, followed by four honestly ranked alternatives. Every result carries an ordinal fit label and an honest confidence level, so a weak match says it is weak instead of pretending otherwise.

The catalogue behind it

The recommendations draw on a corrected 3,000-reference catalogue: 1,805 named meme templates and 1,195 reaction GIFs chosen because real conversations actually used them — each selected GIF has at least 108 observed replies in the GIF Reply research dataset. Every reference records what it expresses, the social dynamic it captures, an example of where it fits, and a near-miss case where it would be wrong. You can browse all of it in the collection.

How matching works

Your comment is compared against two embedding views of the catalogue — one indexed by meaning, one by example — then the shortlist is scored on five ordered fit levels. Comments that involve more than one person are answered from three angles: your reaction, their side, and the situation itself. Serious requests — condolences, apologies, safety, anything that needs a real answer — are declined before humour is considered; no meme is the right meme there. The full methodology, including how results are evaluated, lives on how it works.
