Meme Lab on Anna
Privacy and source information. Updated 5 October 2026.
What happens to your comment
When you choose Find the meme inside Anna, your situation is sent to the Meme Lab search service at memes.significanthobbies.com. The service uses Cloudflare Workers AI and Vectorize to find relevant catalogue references. The shortlist endpoint does not save your comment or write feedback to Meme Lab’s database.
Your situation and the retrieved reference metadata are then sent through Anna to your Anna-configured AI provider for ranking. For editable caption drafts, your situation and selected template metadata also go to Meme Lab’s stateless caption-planning endpoint, then through Anna to your AI provider. Templates without inspected caption regions send their source image URL to that provider for placement. The caption-planning endpoint does not store your situation or run AI itself. Anna and the provider process requests under their own policies, including any retention they apply. Meme Lab does not claim those services have zero retention. Avoid including private or sensitive information in a situation.
Permissions and cost
The Anna edition requests AI completion access. It also requests access to its own per-user Anna storage for saved reference IDs/names and the day of your last visit. The personalized-meme edition also requests image generation, explicit image uploads and file operations in its own per-user Anna app storage. It does not request chat history, credentials, other apps’ storage, camera or microphone access. AI requests may consume your Anna credits or BYOK provider quota; file uploads and private saved creations also use Anna storage quota. There is no separate Meme Lab subscription.
Saved reactions and measurement
Saving a reaction stores only its catalogue ID and name in your own Meme Lab storage bucket on Anna. It never saves your situation. Saved entries remain until you remove them; Anna governs the underlying storage and retention. A last-visit day supports a repeat-visit counter.
Allowlisted interaction event names—for successful matches, abstentions, errors, copied/shared links, saved/removed references, created/saved remixes, download starts, image shares and repeat visits—are sent to Meme Lab for aggregate operational logging in Cloudflare and App Health. These events contain no situation, email, user ID, provider key or persistent tracking identifier. They are client-reported interactions, not verified unique people or earnings. Anna separately records its authenticated app and AI-session activity under its own policies.
The search and event endpoints apply endpoint-specific burst limits using the network IP address as a Cloudflare limiter key. Shared network users share this limit. It does not identify your Anna account or impose an exact global spending cap.
Source previews and sharing
Images and GIFs load directly from their external source providers, including Imgflip, Memegen and Giphy. Those providers receive the normal network request information needed to serve a preview. Source provenance and observed conversational use do not establish redistribution rights. Catalogue caption drafts retain source-preview labels. The separate personalized-meme editor lets you supply an image you can edit and a photo you have permission to use.
Sharing copies a stable public reference link containing its catalogue ID. Your submitted comment is never added to that link. Supported static references can open as editable caption drafts. Their source images load through Meme Lab’s allowlisted media proxy. Downloading explicitly saves the finished captioned PNG privately in Anna before Anna opens the download. Drafts stay in the current tab; source provenance does not establish redistribution or transformation rights. Source previews may become unavailable; the reference name remains visible when a preview fails.
Uploaded photos and personal memes
When you choose Generate my meme, the selected photo and meme image are decoded and re-encoded in your browser to remove embedded metadata, then uploaded to Anna’s R2 storage and sent to your Anna-configured image provider. Meme Lab’s Cloudflare search service does not receive these images, their URLs or image-generation prompts. Anna and the provider govern processing and retention. Clearing the editor removes local previews; it does not promise deletion of images already uploaded to those services.
One requested image is generated per attempt. There is no automatic retry or separate paid-provider fallback. Generated images may change captions, likeness, expression or background; compare the result with the original before sharing. Animated images are not supported. No face recognition or identity verification is performed.
Save to Anna stores only the generated PNG privately in your own Meme Lab file storage. Download also saves the generated PNG there so Anna’s host can open the browser download outside the app frame. Your input photo and situation are not copied into that saved-creation library. Saved outputs persist until you remove them. Removal soft-deletes the saved output, with physical object cleanup governed by Anna’s storage reaper; it does not remove prior recipient copies or source uploads.
Sharing a personal meme attaches its generated image file to your browser’s share chooser where supported. It is an explicit action, with no automatic publication or public gallery. When direct file sharing is unavailable, download the PNG and attach it yourself. File URLs are temporary signed handles, not permanent public share links. Download-start and client share events do not prove recipient delivery or qualified users.
The public website is a separate workflow
If you follow a reference link to the public Meme Lab website and use its composer, that website retains comments and returned candidates for 30 days to support its feedback workflow. This retention does not apply to the Anna shortlist endpoint.
