# one of us — Meme Lab

Use when welcoming or pressuring a newcomer into the group's shared identity

- What it expresses: The statement creates a sense of belonging through group identity
- Example: A new coworker begins using the team's obscure shorthand, and everyone chants 'one of us' to welcome them.
- When not to use it: The newcomer is pressured to abandon an important boundary to fit in; coercive conformity is not harmless belonging.
